Teeth Cleaning

tartar

Regular teeth cleaning (Prophylaxis) by a dental hygienist is to remove tartar (mineralized plaque) that may develop even with careful brushing and flossing.  This happens because there are difficult areas for a patient to reach on his own.  Professional cleaning includes tooth scaling, tooth polishing and debridement if too much tartar has accumulated.  This involves the use of various instruments or devices to loosen and remove deposits from the teeth.  Most visits will also include select dental X-rays, an oral cancer screening, a TMJ (Tempromandibular Joint) exam and a Fluoride treatment.

xrayMost dental hygienists recommend having the teeth professionally cleaned  every 6 to 12 months, with an examination at least every year.  More frequent cleanings and exams may be necessary during the treatment of many of the dental/oral disorders.  In between professional cleanings by a dental hygienist, good oral hygiene is essential for preventing cavities, tartar build-up, and gum disease.  There are also other "cleaning" procedures for the treatment of gingivitis and the control and maintenance of periodontal diseases (periodontitis or pyorrhea).  These are often referred to as "deep scalings".
