Bridgesdental health bridges bridge

A bridge, also known as a fixed partial denture, is a dental restoration.  It is used to replace a missing tooth by joining permanently two or more adjacent teeth or dental implants.

When restoring an edentulous (toothless) space with a crown on both sides and a pontic (dummy tooth) in between, the restoration is referred to as a bridge. There are different types of bridges, depending on how they are fabricated and the way they anchor to the adjacent teeth.

The dental appointment is very similar to that of a crown appointment. It will usually take 2 appointments about 2 - 3 weeks apart. The first visit will prepare the teeth, make an impression of the teeth and place a temporary bridge. The second visit will be to seat the bridge using dental cement. The bridge is usually made by a dental laboratory.

The materials used for the bridges include gold, porcelain fused to metal, or in the correct situation, porcelain alone.  The recipient of such a bridge must be careful to clean well under this prosthesis.
