In the past, the only way to correct dental imperfections was to cover the tooth with a crown. Today, in most cases there are several alternatives: crown, composite resin bonding or porcelain veneer. Veneers are ultra-thin, custom-made porcelain laminates that are bonded directly to the teeth. They are an option for closing gaps or disguising discolored teeth that do not respond well to whitening procedures.

They can be used either to improve the aesthetics of a tooth, or to protect a damaged tooth surface. There are two main types of material used to fabricate a veneer, composite and dental porcelain. A composite veneer may be directly placed (built-up in the mouth) or fabricated by a dental laboratory. Porcelain veneers are custom made by a dental laboratory. Either type made by the lab are later permanently bonded to the tooth. Porcelain is the most common type and typically the most aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
